Ottawa, ON, May 11, 2021: Today, NuEnergy.ai facilitated the delivery of a board education program to enhance the AI Governance knowledge of Canadian boards. Developed in collaboration with the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and capitalizing on the ICD’s established director learning programs, this program educates boards about the promise and risks of artificial intelligence (AI), frameworks for AI governance, and the need to ensure oversight as AI becomes embedded in business operations.
Attendees at the ICD’s introductory webinar in January indicated that while AI was part of their organizations’ business strategy, fewer than ten percent have AI Governance frameworks or policies in place. Catherine Gryba, Chair of the Board of Saskatchewan Mutual Insurance Company, said, “This was one of the most thought provoking webinars I have attended. We have since had NuEnergy.ai present directly to our Board as they recognize the need for informed conversations about the impact of AI on our business.”
Directors participating in the ICD May cohorts benefit from a combination of facilitated and independent learning, and gain practical experience through peer and instructor engagement with board-oriented case studies that will help them ensure AI governance practices are properly considered. All content is curated and delivered by a world-class faculty roster from NuEnergy, and a self-assessment scorecard lets participants understand their organization’s strengths and opportunities in AI governance.
Governance of AI has become an imperative topic facing board members and executives, especially in the post-pandemic era. Niraj Bhargava, Co-Founder and Executive Chair of NuEnergy.ai and ICD National Academic Director, Board Oversight of AI says, “In 2021, governance oversight isn’t just of people and balance sheets, it is also about governing machines, data, and innovations. Today, AI is all around us and has the power to autonomously learn and make its own, or significantly influence, decisions. This must have checks and balances to unleash the positive value and manage risk that senior leaders have the responsibility to monitor. We are proud to be leading educational programs that will ensure more board members can confidently start or advance the important conversation about AI.”
Christine Ing, National Lead and Partner at McCarthy Tetrault, adds, “I am happy to be joining NuEnergy and ICD in educating Canadian board members about AI Governance. As the laws regulating AI come in to focus, forward-thinking organizations are not only keeping abreast of legal developments, but also considering ethical AI governance practices to manage risk and promote trust.”
